Direct answer
7-Zip supports AES-256 in both 7z and ZIP workflows. The 7z format can also encrypt archive headers, hiding file names when that option is enabled. ZIP AES improves content protection but may expose names and requires compatible extractors.
Choose settings deliberately
- Select 7z when recipients use compatible software and header encryption matters.
- Select ZIP with AES-256 when ZIP packaging is required and AES support is confirmed.
- Avoid ZipCrypto for confidential material.
- Use a long, unique passphrase delivered through a separate channel.
- Test extraction before deleting the source or backup.
Compression is not encryption
Creating a ZIP or 7z archive without enabling encryption only packages the files. Verify that a password is requested and that protected contents cannot be read before authentication.
